Homeschooling Tips

If you have been thinking about homeschooling or are new to it, this might be for you.
Resources & tips to help you out:
- Facebook Groups: Search for groups local to you, in your state and/or in your town/city. These groups are important because people can help walk you through what you need to do legally. Each state has different rules and so this is SUPER important. Of course, do your own research too, but man it’s incredible to have the help of other parents. And the coolest thing, these parents are SOOO helpful! What an incredible community (homeschoolers), truly!
- Curriculums: First you need to decide if you want secular vs non secular curriculums. Then you can ask in your homeschool groups which ones they are loving. Be sure to ask for specific subjects and ask them why they like them to help you determine which to use. Also specify if you are looking for free or willing to pay. I also was able to find my daughter’s current favorite chapter books by asking. Currently we are loving the National Park Mystery Series!
- Example: The Good & The Beautiful- Their curriculum is free if you download it vs order it from them & they have QR codes to videos that further explain math lessons to help you and your child better understand before getting started.
- No Curriculums: I know, I just gave you some options, but honestly many people don’t use any. And if you get more comfortable with this, you may as well. Kids do not need to do public school at home, that’s not the point of homeschool. Look into unschooling!
- Example: You can bake and be working on reading, science and math all in one baking activity.
- Example: Collect leaves outside and then make a graph together with leave types and colors, that’s math & science!
- Example: Reading books can teach new vocabulary, geography, science & so much more!
- Example: If your child has a favorite animal, research it (based on age they can read about it on their own with an online article or trip to the library). Then based on their age you can have them write facts that they learned. This is science, reading and writing all in one!
- Looking for Some Activities? I have a few saved here on the blog, I have a homeschool dropdown or you can click here.
Best of luck an I’m proud of you and excited for you to be thinking about homeschool. This is such an incredible opportunity to get more time in with your child and, in my opinion, allow them to be a child and use their imagination for longer.
