Sensory Bin Activity, inspired by Mo Willems, The Pigeon Needs A Bath!

This post is in partnership with Disney Books Group

The Pigeon Needs A Bath is another engaging and funny story from Mo Willems. To celebrate Mo Willems’ Pigeon brand celebrating its 16th BIRD-day, Izzy and I picked one of our favorite books from the series and created a fun sensory experience for you to enjoy with the kids in your life this spring/summer.

What you will need:Animal Toys (i.e. waterproof/plastic ), Water, Kid Safe Soap, Cleaning Water Play Accessories: (i.e. sponges, washcloths, scoops, cups)

Step 1:

Read the book: The Pigeon Needs a Bath!

While reading the book, engage with your child. Ask them questions about the Pigeon. What makes you think the Pigeon needs a bath? You can support them if they aren’t sure and say, i.e “The Pigeon looks brown like he has dirt on him. If we have dirt on us we wash our hands and body.” When the Pigeon tests the tub, ask your child, i.e. “What do you like in your bath?” When the Pigeon finally gets in the bath, discuss how you get clean in the tub, i.e soap, bubbles, washcloth, cups for rinsing.

Step 2:

Get those animals dirty! If needed, add some water to the dirt. Talk about the animals, and how they are getting dirty like the Pigeon. Build on language skills by discussing how the dirt feels and looks (i.e. brown, tan, gritty, smooth, muddy, mucky, wet, dry) Izzy had fun getting the animals wet and then we had them play in the sand and dirt. We also worked on positional words while the animals were getting dirty. (i.e. under, over, around) Izzy really had a blast getting the animals all dirty so they needed a bath like the Pigeon from the book.

Step 3:

Put the animals in the tub for a bath. We used a sensory bin with all natural kid friendly soap. Izzy explored washing the animals with cups, funnels, scoops, sponges, washcloths and more. If you don’t have a sensory bin you can use a water table, plastic bins or buckets.

Step 4:

Repeat & Repeat! Izzy had so much fun with this activity & I’m pretty certain your kid(s) will too. It’s a fun change of pace for the kids to embrace the outdoor mess, and you can incorporate anything you want to see your kid(s) do during bath. For example, phrases like, “Wow, the deer dipped her face in the water!” help your kids understand what happens in the bath. The point of this activity is to have fun and support bath time and help make it a more fun and enjoyable time for your kids. Even if they already love bath time, it’s great for them to work on sensory, physical and cognitive skills while playing.

For more encouragement you can keep a copy of The Pigeon Needs a Bath Book! handy as it’s made to be splashed and played with. The fun storyline is sure to get your kids laughing, and help them comprehend what bath time is for! You can add a new Pigeon book to your library starting June 2nd with the release of The Pigeon HAS to Go to School!

In honor of Mo Willems’ Pigeons 16th BIRD-day, what is your favorite Mo Willems Pigeon book? How do you help your kids enjoy bath time?

XO Eryka
